This month, we continue the World’s Busiest Domestic Routes series of Challenges, crossing the pond as we head to Europe and the country of Spain.

Located in the Western Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Spain, the Madrid to Palma route saw 1,140,759 passengers in 2021 (most current data), making it the busiest European domestic route.

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. The metropolitan area population of approximately 6.7 million. It is the second-largest city in the European Union. Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula. The climate of Madrid features hot summers and cool winters.

Palma, also known as Palma de Mallorca, is the capital and largest city of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands in Spain. It is situated on the south coast of Mallorca on the Bay of Palma. The Cabrera Archipelago, though widely separated from Palma proper, is administratively considered part of the municipality. As of 2022, Palma Airport serves over 28 million passengers per year.
