ATC Instructions

I’m flying a B747-8F and I was contacted by the KZAF Flight Service Station, they gave me the instructions of squawk 2000 and was told to select ATC Comm off and manually contact KZAF, I didn’t understand it and left after a while to not cause any disruptions, can someone help me? For future interactions?

Sounds a little confusing. Squawk 2000 is often used over the Pacifc, as there isn’t radar so codes don’t have to be specific to the aircraft. The rest is weird.

Are you sure they instructed you to turn off your radio and “manually contact” them?
This feels a bit like they may have explained the concept of SELCAL (where pilots essentially mute their radios to avoid having to continuously listen to the HF background noise and if ATC wants to call them, they will send a SELCAL alert to the aircraft in question) to you and you may have misunderstood them?

I belive they were asking you to set your transponder from ATC comm to standby?

However I would question this as all IFR traffic are required by VATSIM to squawk mode C at tll times in flight.

That’s no longer the case (and hasn’t been the case for a while), c.f. CoC B4
