Are you allowed to teleport aircraft on long flights?

If want to fly my first Vatsim flight soon but i have a question.
On long flights, are you allowed to teleport the aircraft to the top of descent when there is no ATC.

Can you also do it if there is ATC online you just notify them?

Yes and no.

It depends on the airspace, and the traffic. If there’s no traffic in the area where you are reconnecting, it is generally fine - but make sure your flight plan is still there and that the aircraft is able to fly properly afterwards.

If you reconnect on an arrival with other traffic in the area, then no.

Tip: First reconnect in observer mode, and see if there is aircraft around by typing " .aircraft " in vPilot and look at the range of the nearby aircraft.

This is excellent advice when you’re looking to reconnect. To do any kind of rate change/speed change/teleport when under ATC control, you can’t simply notify ATC, you must request it from ATC and be approved.

Why not start with a shorter flight to get use to VATSIM? See newbies do this a lot. Get the biggest plane in your fleet and do a super long flight but be impatient and do time acceleration or teleport.

By “teleport”, do you mean use time acceleration? Yes, this is allowed in uncontrolled airspace.

No, some airliners have the feature to just teleport to another waypoint (for example the top of descent )

Disconnect, teleport, reconnect as observer, check that nobody is too close to you and that you are not in airspace covered by ATC (if the former is the case, go somewhere where you are far enough away from others to avoid causing issues for them before reconnecting, if the latter is the case call up the controller with a position report and ask them if it’d be fine for you to reconnect there and get their approval before reconnecting), reconnect as normal.
That way, you pretty much avoid any chance of causing problems for other users or being in violation of the CoC.

Just wanna point out: the aircraft calculated ToD in cruise can often be way behind the actual ToD the controller would give you (due to LoA, sectorization, traffic flows, etc.), so if you teleport to the ToD and there’s ATC in that airspace or an adjacent downstream sector, you may find yourself in a sudden high workload situation because ATC has to beat you down to a certain level in what’s normally way too little distance or fishtail you around to get you enough trackmiles. In some extreme cases that may even lead to ATC being unable to accommodate you reconnecting in their airspace, especially if they are already quite busy otherwise.
All in all, it’s probably easier for everyone involved, but especially you, to pick a short flight if you don’t have enough time or patience for a long haul flight (and after all, nothing keeps you from putting a large long haul aircraft on a 30 minute flight if you wish to do so).
